Could you be a Langloch Champion?
Last year we provided for 156 Participants, through 2021 sessions at Langloch Farm. But what are statistics without the human element? Here are the CCI journeys of 3 of our Participants – and please take time to realise that leaves 153 other Participants all with their own individual stories to be told and needs to be met.
We cannot continue our amazing work here at Langloch Farm without you – our supporters. We’ve broken down just what your monthly contribution would provide for us over the course of a year. Become a Langloch Champion and make meaningful changes to someone’s life, TODAY.
Fiona* is one of our young participants who has been with us for a few years. Residing within a rural community, Fiona felt extremely isolated, abandoned, and fearful for the future. This left Fiona with severe anxiety, compounded by a lack of transport links and a perceived dependency on family.
Fiona’s mental health was impacted so severely that she no longer left the house, could not consider further education, and all social activities felt completely out of reach.
Fiona’s referral to CCI gave her the opportunity and skills to challenge her own perceptions and build a quietly confident foundation upon which she can dismantle her barriers to inclusion and in turn rebuild a platform upon which she can stand and view her own future opportunities. Fiona would tell you herself the journey from living behind those barriers to building her own story has not been an easy one. But thanks to the skilled placement and group support workers at CCI, Fiona has had support every stage of her journey with us – even if that meant pausing placement work to remove anxieties – and a judgement free, patient and inclusive environment in which she has discovered and developed notable skills, and a personal growth that has even allowed for mentoring and skill sharing with her peers.
Fiona’s future, no matter which direction she chooses to look in, is now looking positive.
We share Fiona’s story to highlight that not all health conditions, even those that can be extremely debilitating, are visible. *Names and identifying details have been changed to protect the privacy of our Participants.
Liam* came to CCI with an established skillset in hospitality thanks to placements through other organisations and local authority support. We were only too delighted to nurture these skills, and working with our Placement Support Team we were able to direct Liam into a placement stream he felt he would flourish in. Now, this “case study” appears highly positive from the get-go, doesn’t it? But here’s the rub; despite Liam still being someone who requires additional support and has additional needs, he is – on paper – someone that is considered “too good” and “too independent”.
So, what does this mean? Speaking bluntly, it means that an adult trying to be independent and trying to learn sufficient skills to be gainfully employed in the face of his own health conditions/additional needs, still faces barriers to inclusion at every step and turn. Local authority services already stretched thin only go so far, and it is those who are deemed sufficiently “able” that are the first ones to suffer – something that can and will trigger a back-slide in their health and wellbeing.
Liam has suffered from placements being withdrawn with little or no notice, placements cut short, criteria changing meaning he is no longer eligible for placements – we could go on. But thankfully we are proud to have Liam here at CCI. Our placement support team and group lead cannot speak highly enough of his progress working through all challenges his placement may throw at him. Liam retains his independence and takes time to help any of his fellow placements however he can. Ultimately, we want to support Liam in his goal of securing employment rather than placement within the hospitality sector.

Hugh* is one of our longest attending Participants here at CCI. He enjoys working with staff and fellow participants alike and has a particular interest in practical tasks across all the Departments he has had placements with.
This has not always been the case for Hugh – when he first joined CCI his additional complex needs required tasks to be structured with little or no deviation from the way they were laid out and explained to him. Hugh’s health matters require consideration towards structure and routine and a level of support which could preclude him from working alongside Participants who could not facilitate rigidity.
Personal health aside, this “case study” doesn’t sound particularly negative, and you may be expecting additional hurdles and situations that Hugh has required to overcome – but this is not the case; Barriers to inclusion include judging a person based on their health or disability alone – and we have never viewed Hugh’s worth as being the sum total of his personal health.
In the considerable time that Hugh has been with CCI, we have seen fundamental growth and gentle change in the way Hugh perceives himself and the world around him and approaches and navigates same. Hugh may thrive on routine and structure, but he now readily adds his energy to any working Team he is assigned to, he is able to achieve tasks which rely upon a greater level of uncertainty, something that Hugh now has the skill set to adapt himself to, and accept, instruction as a “live” task. Hugh now proactively seeks out the next task while working on a large-scale project such as the Mill Shed and can work in a Team whose composition may be unknown.
We are proud to have been part of Hugh’s journey from being a young man whose health caused a greatly reduced quality of life, to an adult who – while he will always require support – now has a skillset that can not only self-support to a far greater extent but also has a repertoire of practical skills anyone would be proud to call their own.
